We cordially invite everyone to a meeting of the Value Research Seminar this Friday 16.3.2018 at 16 o'clock, Sala 1.05 of I&D (1st floor of Research and Development building). The purpose of these meetings is to allow researchers to exchange ideas, discuss problems, work in progress, and texts chosen for reading. This session is a problem discussion led by Erich Rast (IFILNOVA) on the topic:
Lexicographic Principles in the Theory of Value Structure.
In this problem session, I go through some of the Spectrum arguments against the transitivity of 'better than' that have been introduced by Parfit, Rachels, and Temkin. I briefly lay out responses by Rachels (2001), Voorhoeve (2013), Handfield (2016), Klocksiem (2016), and Nebel (2017) amongst others, and then raise the question whether lexical thresholds are perhaps a fundamental feature of our value systems.
